The word freedom is also used as a vibration engineering term, and is used together with a coordinate angle to express the motion and vibration phenomena of an object in a formula. In other words, in vibration, there must be coordinates to mark the vibrating object as the amplitude and frequency of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. 자유(freedom)라는 단어는 진동공학용어로도 사용되는데 좌표각(degree)과 같이 어울려 사용되어 물체의 운동 및 진동현상을 수식적으로 표현하기 위하여 사용된다. 즉, 진동에서는 진동하는 물체를 변위, 속도, 가속도의 진폭과 주파수로 표기할 좌표가 있어야 하는 데 이때 진동의 ‘자유도(degree of freedom)’라는 용어가 사용된다. 자유는 고유(#Eigen value; natural)와 같다고 생각한다. 왜냐하면 고유한 특성을 내는 상태는 자유 그 자체이기 때문이다.

계의 거동을 표현하는 좌표의 수를 ‘자유도’라고 한다.

A person hears because the eardrum vibrates, and sees the reflected form with the eyes because of the transmission by the wave of light. Breathing involves repetitive movements of the lungs, and walking is achieved by cyclic oscillating movements of the arms and legs. In addition, it speaks through the movement of the larynx and tongue, and it is possible to know that there is a call through sound or vibration. Early scholars in the field of vibration focused their efforts on the development of mathematical theories to understand natural phenomena, and were applied to the design of machines, structures, engines, and control systems in an engineering way, and focused on the design of motion, and safety, productivity, and asset management in the field. In order to efficiently proceed with vibration, vibration continues to be researched on the health and destruction of structures and machines, and human discomfort.

진동의 나쁜점과 좋은점에 대하여 진동의 피해와 진동의 사용 회전하는 기계(엔진, 팬, 펌프, 모터 등)는 잘못된 설계나 현재의 나쁜 상태로 인해 #불평형(Imbalance) 진동이 발생한다. 불평형은 고속으로 회전시 제2의 큰 진동을 유발할 수 있으며 반복된 운동의 반복으로 소성변형 또는 파괴에 이르게 된다. 터빈의 날개진동(#Flutter)은 큰 손해를, 지진(#Seismic)은 막대한 인적 그리고 재산피해를, 절삭가공의 채터링(#Chattering)은 불량품의 원인이 되기도 한다. 공진(#Resonance)으로 인해 과도한 처짐과 파괴(#Fatigue failure)가 발생하고 인간에게 전달되는 진동은 불편함과 효율저하를 가져온다. 이러한 측면에서 공학자들은 불평형을 최소화하는 견실한 지지구조물과 기계를 설계하도록 노력하고 있다. 따라서 진동과 #소음은 안전과 수명, 생산성, 환경문제에 밀접하게 연결되어 있고 항공, #철도, #자동차, #교량, 우주, #건축물, #공장, 아파트, 도로, #반도체, 정유 등 모든 산업분야에서 그 피해성과 관련되어 있다.
